Indian Food Calorie Calculator
Build your thali and see what it actually costs. Portions are in katoris and rotis, and you pick whether it was cooked at home, in a restaurant, or at a dhaba, because that changes the number more than the dish does.
Home, restaurant or dhaba: a katori of dal makhani is 170, 220 or 285 calories. Every figure traces to a published recipe, and we correct ours in public.

* Dhaba estimate: the restaurant figure plus 6 g of ghee, about 54 calories. Every other figure is a published version on that dish page.
How this calculator works
- Every dish uses the stated recipe on its own page, so each number traces back to ingredients you can check.
- The preparation setting uses our published home, restaurant, and dhaba versions of each dish. Where we have not published a dhaba version, we add 6 g of ghee to the restaurant figure, about 54 calories, which is the typical gap between restaurant and richer versions across our dishes.
- One katori is 150 ml. One cup is 240 ml, so a cup is 1.6 katori. Cups are shown only for dishes served in a katori. Breads, pieces, and plates are counted as they are.
- Grams and ounces come from each dish's stated serving weight. One ounce is 28.35 g.
Why these numbers are more precise
- Most calculators give one number per dish. The same dal makhani is about 170 calories at home and 285 at a dhaba, so one number is wrong for most plates.
- Portions are in katoris and rotis, the way Indian food is actually served, not a generic serving.
- Every figure links to its recipe and sources. If we get one wrong, we correct it in public.
Correction, September 2026: we previously listed one katori of rice as 150 g and 195 calories. Our own katori guide and USDA density data put a lightly packed 150 ml katori at about 120 g, so we corrected rice, jeera rice, and veg pulao to 120 g per katori.
More on the numbers behind this tool: the nutrition data audit, the katori portion guide, and why restaurant food runs 30 to 50 percent higher.
Common questions
How many calories are in an Indian thali?
It depends entirely on what is on it. A simple home plate of one katori of dal tadka, one katori of rice and two rotis is about 556 calories before any sabzi. A restaurant dinner of butter chicken, two butter naan and a katori of jeera rice is about 1,108. Build your own plate above to see yours.
How accurate is this calculator?
Every number comes from a stated recipe you can open and check, and the cooking style changes the figure the way real kitchens do. These are careful estimates, not lab measurements: your katori and your cook's hand with ghee still vary, so weigh your katori once if you want to be precise.
Why are restaurant and dhaba numbers higher than home?
Fat. Restaurants use roughly three to five times the oil, ghee, butter and cream of a home kitchen, and it disappears into the dish. The same dal makhani is about 170 calories a katori at home, 220 at a restaurant and 285 at a dhaba.

Be one of the first to use Katori.
This calculator is the manual version. Katori does it from one photo of your plate, works out the portions, and asks when it is not sure if your dal had ghee.
