Biryani Calories Compared: Which Is Lightest, Which Has Most Protein
By Shivam Verma, FounderPublished Last updated
Biryani is one dish name for very different plates. A mutton biryani is about 520 calories a plate; a veg biryani about 350; an egg biryani about 340. And the highest-calorie one is not the highest-protein one. This page compares every common biryani on calories and protein so you can order the one that fits your goal, not just your craving.
Every biryani, compared
One standard restaurant plate of 250 g for each, so the comparison is like for like.
| Biryani | Calories | Protein (g) | Fat (g) | Protein per 100 cal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mutton biryani | 520 | 24 | 22 | 4.6 |
| Hyderabadi biryani | 500 | 21 | 21 | 4.2 |
| Chicken biryani | 480 | 22 | 18 | 4.6 |
| Paneer biryani | 390 | 13 | 13 | 3.3 |
| Veg biryani | 350 | 8 | 10 | 2.3 |
| Egg biryani | 340 | 13 | 10 | 3.8 |
The last column is protein divided by calories, times 100. It is the column that reorders the list: veg biryani is the second lightest plate and the worst protein deal on it.
Vegetarian does not mean lighter
A veg biryani saves you 130 calories against chicken and costs you 14 g of protein. The rice does not change between versions, and rice is most of the plate; taking the meat out removes the protein while leaving the carbohydrate and most of the fat behind.
Egg biryani is the interesting one. At 340 calories it is the lightest plate on the table, and at 13 g it carries the same protein as paneer biryani for 50 fewer calories. If you want a lighter biryani that still feeds you, that is the order.
Why the same biryani varies so much
Portion and ghee move a single biryani further than the choice between two biryanis does. Chicken biryani across three real preparations:
| Chicken biryani | Calories | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|
| Home, lighter | 400 | 21 |
| Standard restaurant plate | 480 | 22 |
| Rich dum biryani, large plate | 640 | 26 |
A 240 calorie spread inside one dish name, against a 180 calorie spread between mutton and egg biryani. The kitchen matters more than the menu line.
The verdict
For protein per calorie, chicken biryani. It ties mutton on the ratio at 4.6 g per 100 calories and saves you 40 calories and 4 g of fat a plate.
For the lightest plate that still counts as a meal, egg biryani at 340 calories with 13 g of protein. Veg biryani is barely lighter and gives you 8 g.
Whatever you order, the ghee and the plate size will move it by more than the choice did. A home biryani and a rich dum biryani are 240 calories apart under the same name.
Biryani usually comes with a raita and something on the side. The Indian food calorie calculator totals the whole order rather than the plate on its own.
